Call for Art for the 42nd Annual Philosophy Symposium

42nd Annual Philosophy Symposium: Africana Philosophy

In celebration of the 42nd Annual Philosophy Symposium, the Department of Philosophy at Salisbury University invites students, alumni and community members to submit works of art for a juried show that engages conceptually with the Symposium theme.

The Theme

This year’s theme focuses on the work of philosophers Derrick Darby (Rutgers University) and Chike Jeffers (Dalhousie University) along the theme of Africana Philosophy.  Peoples of the African continent and in diaspora have had a substantial, but often under-recognized impact on philosophy throughout history.  The philosophers invited to our symposium have assembled multi-ethnic and global senses of Africana philosophy in the present day, and will raise complex issues of race, power, history, autonomy and identity as they receive treatment out of African  and diasporic sources.  They include themes of culture as a gift, inclusive and intersectional views of history, a critical analysis of the role of race in contemporary and historical philosophical schema, and raise fundamental questions of justice across peoples and history and in a Postcolonial world.  Successful works of art will speak to the unique and plural views of humanity, culture and place that Africana thought contributes.

Prize

Works will be reviewed by a panel of faculty from SU’s Galleries, Art and Philosophy departments and finalists’ work will be displayed at the Philosophy House during the Philosophy Symposium.  The Department of Philosophy will adjudicate one work to be included in the permanent collection at the Philosophy House.  Works submitted should be valued no higher than $300.
